Young Filipino-American Achievers Awarded for 2017

YFAA interns Randy, Noel and Christian in Quezon City, Philippines

Los Angeles, CA (June 10, 2017) – Gawad Kalinga USA, a 501c3 nonprofit anti-poverty movement, in partnership with Seafood City Supermarket, the premier Filipino grocery chain in North America, is pleased to announce the Young Filipino-American Achievers (YFAA) awardees for 2017. The YFAA program awards internship grants to three outstanding Filipino-American students who will participate in GK USA’s 4-week Social Development Internship held in the Philippines each summer.

This year’s YFAA awardees are Randy Reyes from California State University San Marcos, Noel Martin Rubio from the University of Chicago, and Christian Luciano from Northwestern University. The trio will join Filipino students on a four-week immersive learning experience with a marginalized community in the Philippines, with a focus on developing cultural competency as well as social investigation and community development skillsets. The program is conducted in partnership with EXP Trek, a social enterprise focused on delivering structured immersive learning experiences in collaboration with developing communities in the Philippines, and the Ateneo de Manila University.

Through this experience, the YFAA awardees will explore how social problems can be addressed through financially sustainable earned-income activities, while experiencing the dynamics within underdeveloped communities through an extended immersion experience. “We are proud of our YFAA awardees and wish them the best as they embark on this life-changing experience,” says Maricel Barreiro Villanueva, Executive Director of GK USA. “GK and Seafood City are looking forward to seeing the impact that our awardees can have through their internship.”

The YFAA scholars are currently in the Philippines to participate in the GK USA Social Development Internship program from June to July this summer.
